Rocky View Schools (RVS) will open its newest school in Langdon to Grade 9 – 11 students in September 2024, with plans to expand to Grade 12 the following year as decided by the Board of Trustees for RVS at its public meeting today.
Starting with the 2024/25 school year, Langdon School and Indus School will become Kindergarten – Grade 8 schools. Students from both schools will move on to the new high school in Langdon starting at Grade 9. Sarah Thompson School will remain a Kindergarten – Grade 5 school. Sarah Thompson students will be designated to Langdon School for Grades 6 – 8. High school students living in Chestermere will continue to be designated to Chestermere High School for Grades 10 – 12.
“For the first time, students in the Langdon area will be able to benefit from learning where they live from Kindergarten through to graduation,” said Board Chair, Fiona Gilbert. “The Board believes this decision honours what we heard from the community alongside information and accommodation planning factors considered to reach a solution in the best interest of students in these communities.”
The Board’s decision was informed by feedback received through spring and fall engagements where parents, guardians, staff, students and community members shared their thoughts in-person and online.
While a range of ideas and perspectives were shared, there was widespread support to keep school friends and siblings together, keep Grade 7 and 8 children with younger grades, minimize disruption to student learning and continue to make effective use of current facilities.
“The community has rallied behind having a local school for students in higher grades for many years,” said Superintendent of Schools, Greg Luterbach. “RVS appreciates their contributions and looks forward to celebrating the school opening with parents/guardians, students and staff.”
RVS is committed to ensuring smooth transitions for students and looks forward to sharing more information with families in preparation for the new school year. Naming the school will mark another exciting milestone in forming the new school community in Langdon. RVS encourages all parents/guardians, staff and students to share their ideas with the naming committee through RVSEngage. Recommendations will be provided to the Board for consideration in February 2024.
