Kindergarten

Kindergarten is an exciting milestone for both children and families. Children are ready to explore and experiment with their surroundings and develop important social skills, and Kindergarten helps support this learning. These early experiences set the foundation for lifelong learning and begin to build the skills children need to become confident, resilient and contributing members of the community.

Kindergarten is a voluntary program in the year prior to Grade 1. Students will strengthen their personal, social and physical skills and develop further in language arts, math, social studies, science and the arts. These learning experiences will be developmentally appropriate and help promote a positive attitude toward lifelong learning.

Advanced registration begins in January; watch our registration page for more information. A child must be five years of age by December 31 of the school year the child begins Kindergarten.

Assessment and Communication of Student Learning

Students are assessed based on outcomes in Alberta’s K to 12 curriculum and programs of study.

Teachers use a variety of strategies to communicate student progress and achievement. Communication about student achievement includes summary information and narratives about the student’s strengths, areas for improvement and next steps.

Parents/guardians can access their child’s learning progress throughout the year through the PowerSchool portal. This real-time reporting means data is available any time, without waiting for scheduled report cards. Parents/guardians are also encouraged to check in with their child’s teacher as desired. For more information, please see our Parent Guide to Real Time Reporting.

Parents/guardians will be invited to meet with their child’s teacher in the fall and spring to discuss the student’s progress.
